READY FOR WAR

All this is simply the best proof that we really do not need the Germans for the World War we are preparing for, because any one of us can play the role of the Germans. We have namely become a threat to one another and can only see a mortal enemy in each other. And if a Ljubljana native calls himself a Mariborian, this can only be understood that he would like to Ljubljana-ize the Mariborians.

Born in 1980 in Ljubljana, Goran Vojnović is a graduate of the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, in film and television production. In 2008 his literary debut Southern Scum Go Home (Čefurji raus!) was published, which quickly won the public attention, numerous critical responses and has been reprinted several times as well as translated into numerous other languages. The novel won him the prestigious Prešeren Fund Prize in 2009, the Delo Kersnik Award for best novel in 2008 and the Vileniški Kristal Award at the Vilenica international literary festival. Based on the novel, an extremely successful show was produced, directed by Mare Bulc, which has already seen more than 250 repeats; currently, a movie version is also being prepared, with Goran Vojnović preparing the script in collaboration with the renowned Bosnian script writer, poet and writer Abdulah Sidran. In 2010, Vojnović made a feature film based on his own script Piran Pirano, which received three awards at last year’s Festival of Slovenian Film (best script, best editing, best female lead). This April, he received the award for best film and best male lead at the film Festival of South-East Europe and the award for contribution to international dialogue at the festival at Cottbus last November. In addition, Vojnović is a regular columnist at the Dnevnik newspaper; last year the Študentska založba publishing house published his collection of columns When Jimmy Choo meets Fidel Castro, which saw its Serbian translation this year. In late November his second novel, Yugoslavia, my Country, was published.
